Counter Strike. It is considered the measuring stick for team based e-sport FPS games. It has atrocious weapon balance and awful maps - something that usually makes an FPS 'bad'. Yet it's ridiculously popular amongst competitive players. Popular e-sport games aren't e-sport games because they are good - they are just that, popular. People can and do like bad things.

The only reason this thread got sidetracked is the zomg best game evar crap, but that said, a game as old as TA that still has a playerbase probably isn't a bad game.
TA itself is a good game. Personally, I find it better than StarCraft. It's wealth of units offers a unique method of balancing - units aren't balanced in the normal fashion. There's just so RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing many units, something is going to counter something else. This does not make it good for competitive gameplay - but if it became popular, like Counter Strike, it would hardly matter. Now, personally, though I like Total Annihilation, it's not the best RTS of all time. Blasphemy in this thread, I know, but it's not. Homeworld is.

TA is a STEAMING. PILE. OF. SHIT.

Though you really have to love guns that can shoot across the entire map, and winning by pressing highlighting 500 units, and clicking on the opposite side.

You wouldn't know a good troll if one punched you in the face.

This game might have been big in it's time but now it's extremely primitive and outdated. Stop worshipping it and move on. There are plenty of better games out there.

Ah... I remember sending in my commander into the base of my opponent and making him selfdestruct.

Building a Big Bertha (sp?) and finally after half an hour of buildtime could commence shooting everything to pieces at the other side of the battlefield.

Ow and aircraft carriers....

And Peewee ofcourse ^^

Good times.

I found that to be a very therapeutic way of playing the game.

2 or 3 Big Berthas and you were good to go.

I still love my army of Tritons...and The Annihilator...I think it was called. That was a genius toy also.

building hundreds of hawks, having them attack a target across the map and watching the spectacle as they form a spectacularly massive formation across your radar, spread out, then collapse in for the kill

good times

Agree. Even better with mods like the starwars one. HW2 was pretty sweet as well.

I loved doing that, I'd have 20 or so construction planes set to "guard" the aircraft constructor and they'd help spew out about 50 Freedom Fighters in a matter of minutes.

Look, guys, Total Annihilation was a great game. Not the best ever, but also not bad. Quite great, really.

Of course, it's also quite old. Nothing withstads the test of time forever.

Starcraft might be old and the graphics shitty as hell, but at least it's a classic. Now this annihilation thing looks just as crap and ISN'T a classic...booo

hah, thats great compared to people like the poster above you "it not clasic it shit atlst starcraft clasic"

Give it a try, im sure you'll love it. Refer to my other post for where to get it, go to the link in the OP to get all the updates/patches (that link to download the game already has the patch I think), 3rd party maps and units, mods, mutations, etc. etc.

Well it was released a year prior to Starcraft, and it was fair amount more complex. Complexity can sometimes lead games to be less desirable because it takes time to learn it. Take X3: Reunion for example. That game has a higher learning curve than Eve, it got nothing but good reviews and yet many people have never heard of it because it's complexity and steep learning curve scare people off.

Don't knock it unless you've tried it is what I'm trying to say, I guess.

EDIT: Another reason it wasn't as popular was probably due to the fact that it was a bit of a performance hog much like it's current day lookalike. It was probably one of the first RTS games to be entirely (or almost entirely) 3d, it also featured it's own physics engine and very good graphics for it's time.

I remember doubling my RAM to a whopping 64Mb just so I could play the Seven Islands map.
